THE "VERILY, VERILY"s
OF JESUS IN THE GOSPEL OF JOHN

By the use of the words "Verily, Verily" or as some newer versions put it, "Truly, Truly," or "Most Assuredly," Jesus was apparently emphasizing an important point. Mathew, Mark and Luke have Jesus using "Verily" but John notes Jesus' unique useages of "Verily, Verily."
  1. He prefaced His remarks about the New Birth of the "Water and the Spirit" with those arresting words, "Verily, Verily" (Jn.3:3-5)
  2. In connection to what Jesus taught Nichodemus on that occasion, said He, "We speak what we know and testify to what We have seen..." That was preceeded by a "Verily, Verily." (Jn. 3:11). Indeed Jesus knows all things (2:24-25).
  3. Likewise when He talked about conditions for eternal life: "hear" and "believe" (both implying the other conditions - repentance, confession and full compliance with His will (see Mk.16:16;Heb. 5:8-9), He uses those arresting words, "Verily, Verily" (Jn.5:24-25; 6:47).
  4. The sharp rebuke from the lips of the Lord to the multitude for following Him merely "for the loaves and were filled" had a "Verily, Verily" before it (Jn.6:27-27)
  5. To emphasize what His Father did in giving the "bread from heaven" Jesus headed that up with a "Verily, Verily" (Jn.6:32-33).
  6. When The Saviour discussed the need for us to spiritually imbibe, assimulate and digest Him and His words He impressed the thought with "Verily, Verily" (Jn. 6:53,63)
  7. The Lord emphasized the fact that "whosoever commits sin is a slave of sin" by the use of a "Verily, Verily" (Jn.8:34)
  8. And the powerful truth that "If anyone keeps My word he shall never see death" was driven home by a "Verily,Verily" (Jn.8:51)
  9. When He wanted to tell of His pre-existence He told it with an emphatic "Verily, Verily" (Jn. 8:58)
  10. The true "Door" for our entering unto salvation is presented with a "Verily, Verily" (Jn.10:1-7).
  11. The Lord Jesus, stated a known truth when he said that for a grain of wheat to produce fruit it must first die. His mian point in that had reference to fruit His own death would produce. That great truth He presented with a "Verily, Verily" (Jn. 12:24)
  12. Another special truth in regard to humility is headed up with a "Verily, Verily" (Jn.13:16)
  13. And yet another needed truth in respect to the importance of receiving the "whomever" that Jesus sends is presented with a "Verily, Verily" (Jn.13:20).
  14. The annonucement of His betrayal had a "Verily, Verily" before it (Jn.13:21).
  15. Peter's denial of His Master was predicted with a sad and sober "Verily, Verily" (Jn.13:38)
  16. The "greater work" of spreading the gospel and saving souls was forwarded by a "Verily, Verily" (Jn.14:12).
  17. The mixed reactions of His rejection, suffering and death were noted with a "Verily, Verily" (Jn.16:20).
  18. The sincere requests of His apostles being honoured by their Master were presented with a "Verily, Verily" (Jn.16:23-24).
  19. The sober prediction that Peter would be incompacitated in his older years was stated with a "Verily, Verily" (Jn.21:18).
